What's New at West Street?

- It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of composer/psychiatrist/inventor Emmanuel Ghent at age 77, on March 31, 2003.

"Emmanuel Ghent was an extraordinary and wonderful person, a warmly human pursuer of both science and art, as a psychiatrist, teacher, composer, and technological innovator for the arts. He was also one of the most lovable and also wisest people I've ever met and I'm sure he will be deeply missed by many." - Laurie Spiegel, friend and colleague who worked with Mannie at Bell Labs.

A complete listing of Emmanuel Ghent's works is available from the New York Public Library.

I approached Lt. William Keegan and asked him if by any chance he knew any poets or songwriters in the Port Authority Police Department. He sighed and said that the PAPD lost a songwriter/poet on 9.11. I said I was sorry my question elicited such a sad response. "But there's someone else though you should talk to, an officer named Norma Hardy, she has written a poem that has been read at many services already." Norma and I met later that night and she gave me a copy of "The Men". As soon as I read it, I knew I wanted to put it to music.

Velour is an acoustic, piano-vocal collection of songs Val has written over the course of many years. She went into the studio by herself, engineering her own performances, with the intention of recording each song 'live', just to see how the songs worked. Now here they are on CD, as is, with no alteration. With very minimal production - two songs have a drum loop, two songs have backing vocals - most of the songs are solo voice and piano. The songs range from the intensely personal to the quizzical, yet each song speaks to all who listen. "Tell Someone" has already become a most requested song at Val's live shows!
